My sister and I visited a small town in the North East called "Waltham Abbey". The town is known for the medieval church. The Abby has more than a thousand years of history and it's been maintained in good condition and it's impressive.
We had lunch at locally known Pie and Mash shop which I found on TripAdvisor. The pie was something I've never seen before. Beef pie with scoops of mash potatoes and so-called "liquor" sauce. The sauce was a bit too salty to me but overall it was a good experience.
The town of Waltham Abby was bit rustic and shabby. The park was well maintained but there was no one around.
「ウォーサム・アビー」フィンチリーから東北の方向へ４０分ほどにある町。ローカルのロンドン日帰り旅行ガイドに載っていて、近いので行ってみる事にした。アビーは１０００年以上の歴史があるそうで、天井や柱の装飾がとても綺麗な教会だった。
お昼にトリップアドバイザーで調べた地元のパイ屋に入った。ミートパイにマッシュポテトとリカーと呼ばれるパセリソースをかけるもので、独特な田舎料理。調べてみたら「パイ＆マッシュ」はロンドン南東の労働者の料理だそうで、うなぎのゼリーと頂くものらしい。塩味が強かったが、それなりに美味しかった。
町には見る所はないので公園で遊んだが、人もほぼ老人しかいない、寂しい感じの町だった。教会の神父さんが親切に招き入れてくれたことや、パイ屋で耳にした地元の人のアクセントが強かったのがとても印象的だった。
